At first glance, this scene near Lanzhou seems to consist of nothing but barren hills - except for some courtyard houses in the upper right hand corner. Upon closer inspection, however, it is evident there are narrow strips of farmland etched on the long narrow valleys. Imagine the labor involved in carving out these fields from the harsh landscape, and in cultivating them.If this is how it looks at the height of summer in August, can we imagine how it would look in winter? How do people actually survive winters there?
Why do people insist on living such a hard life there? Perhaps they don’t really have a choice? Why?
